This is a portrait of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, done for my MFA thesis project. I’ve made a whole body of work that has this look, and they may look similar in style, but these pieces are more than just floating heads. They’re about exploring the tension between density and emptiness. I’ve had a lot of loss in my life in the period in which I’ve been making these and I’ve come to realize that these are meditations on our brief time here. We exist for a short time, cramming life into a few decades if we're lucky, and then we're off to the unknown. I usually don’t listen to anything while making this work, and treat creating these as a meditative process.
